Pickleballs are designed for speed, control, and durability, and ensuring you choose the right ones makes a lot of difference on the court. There are two main differences between indoor and outdoor pickleball balls. Indoor balls are lighter, softer, and have 26 bigger holes, which makes them easier to control in smaller spaces. While outdoor balls are generally harder wearing, with 40 smaller holes to help them glide through the wind, and can handle rough courts.
While you can certainly use outdoor pickleball balls inside, you may not get the same level of performance you would from inside balls, as the courts vary. For example, outside pickleball balls will bounce much more and move faster on an indoor court.
The frequency you play pickleball will dictate how long your balls will continue performing at their best. Over time, your pickleball balls will start to lose bounce and may start to crack from extended use. When you start noticing a drop in performance, that is the best time to replace them.
